El Eje for Chrome

Your whole tango library, in the browser, offline, private, free.

El Eje for Chrome carries the same tango knowledge that powers El Eje Player onto the web. Look up any recording in a side panel, follow the lyrics, original and translation, right on a YouTube video, and even identify a tango playing in a tab by its sound. The whole library snapshot lives inside the extension, so lookup works with no internet and no account. The only thing that can leave your browser is anonymous contributions you opt into (corrections and lyric or timing edits), never audio, never personal data.

Three ways to use it

Listen, read, and reference, all from the same offline library.

▶️

Listen

On any youtube.com tango video, a follow-along lyric panel appears with the Spanish and English side by side, plus a “pick the right version” corrector when a title is ambiguous.

📖

Read

Full lyrics with line-by-line translation and the contributors who made them, so you always know what the song is actually saying.

🔎

Reference

A side panel that identifies any recording, orchestra, singer, year, genre, key, BPM, and mood, and lists other recordings of the same song.

What it does

Built on a deduplicated snapshot of the El Eje tango library, about 20,000 recordings.

🪪

Rich recording cards

Orchestra · singer · year · genre · key · BPM, eight mood markers, and the original + translated lyrics with credits, the full picture of a track at a glance.

🧩

Suggest a tanda

When a track belongs to one of the curated tandas, the side panel can reveal that set, orchestra, singer, year range, and each track, so you can see the company a recording keeps.

🖱️

Right-click lookup

Select a song title anywhere on the web, right-click, and choose “Look up in El Eje.” The side panel opens straight to that recording.

🔗

Jump to a source

One click out to YouTube, Spotify, or a web search for any recording, handy for previewing or sharing a specific version.

🎬

YouTube follow-along

The overlay reads the video title and channel, matches it to the library, and shows the lyrics in a tidy panel. When El Eje has timings for that recording it highlights the current line and auto-scrolls as it plays, and you can correct it if it guesses the wrong take.

🎧

Detect a tango by sound

Not sure what's playing? Detect tango listens to the tab's audio, fingerprints it on your own machine, and opens the matching recording, great for Spotify, SoundCloud, blog embeds, or a DJ mix. It abstains rather than guess, and audio never leaves your Mac.

Fix & time the lyrics

Edit or add lyrics (Spanish + English stay paired), and tap along, on a YouTube video or in the panel, to time each line as it's sung. Keep your edits locally, export them as a file, or opt in to share them anonymously so everyone's library gets better.

🌐

Offline & private by default

A Manifest V3 side panel with the whole library bundled in, lookup needs no server and no account, and keeps working on a plane or in a basement milonga. The only thing that ever leaves is anonymous contributions you choose to turn on: corrections and lyric/timing edits, never audio or personal data.

🪧

Hover-to-learn

On any web page, El Eje quietly underlines orchestra and singer names. Hover for a card with the bio, key facts, and how many recordings you already have, then open it in the side panel.

On the roadmap: DJ filters by key, BPM & mood, a Spotify-web overlay, and an optional live link to the running Mac app.

How it stays current

The extension ships with a snapshot of the library exported from El Eje Player. When lyrics, translations, or metadata improve in the app, a fresh snapshot is built and the extension updates with it, so the web companion always reflects the same curated, deduplicated data you rely on in the booth. And it improves in both directions: corrections, lyric edits, and line timings you contribute (anonymously, only if you opt in) are pooled and folded into future snapshots.

For now El Eje is distributed right here as a direct download that refreshes as the library improves; a Chrome Web Store listing may come later. Por ahora El Eje se distribuye acá como descarga directa que se actualiza a medida que mejora la biblioteca; más adelante quizás haya una versión en la Chrome Web Store.
